Summer Slam 2019 - Week 2 - Day 4

Hello Parents,
Happy Thursday, we trust? Foremost, thanks to the volunteers who have heeded our call to help with the 'Beach clean-up'!  It's good to have you onboard!

We had an awesome day with cooking, dancing, singing, craft making and learning!

Don't forget it’s the beach clean up tomorrow, and the logistics are:
  • We board the bus, for the beach,  at 9:20 am  We expect to arrive at our destination by, 9:40 am
  • Briefing and team delegation at 9:45 am
  • Clean up (and have fun while at it) from 10 - 11:00 am
  • Snack time
  • Return to school by 11:20 am
We look forward to seeing you all there! We shall be carrying extra water, and sunscreen however, please see that your child, brings a wide-brimmed hat or a cap with a vizor to school. Also please apply sunscreen on your child, liberally, before he/she is sent to school.

Please scroll down to view the day's happenings!
Brainstorming with Maitri:

We completed our “save the sea’ T-shirt project and the product looks great! Then we listened to Maitri talk about what we need to pick at the beach and what we shouldn't. We had samples of bottle caps, plastic bottles, plastic bags, shells, wood and rocks to underscore the point. Hopefully, we made a difference to the state of the beach.
Cookery :

We are going full swing with preparing food from America for the week. Both Mac and his buddy Cheese went hand in hand to provide a superb luncheon. They behaved so well, blending smoothly, not lumping and it was a beautiful partnership. Now, who’s gonna say no to that? We had many going for seconds and there was none left to 'ta pau'!

This is how it all went down in the morning:

First, we boiled the macaroni.
As this was happening, we got busy with making our cheese sauce.
We grated the cheese, melted the butter and then we added the milk to that, Stirring very keenly to get a smooth blend, was accompanied by the sounds of rumbling tummies. Seeing that the pasta was cooked,  we strained the macaroni and held it under cold water to stop it from over-cooking. Then it was just to ladle in the rich and steamingly fragrant sauce that drove the rumbling noises into hyper-drive. Mac and cheese - that's how we did it!

Here's some inspiration if you opt to do a Mach 'n Cheese family dinner at home!
Basket Ball

Uncle Dennis and Sathish are confident that we have a good set of players who are training hard to the lead-up to the 'game'.

Today is our practice match and its game on!  We are still looking for a volunteer to commentate for our finals on Friday afternoon. Auditions are open! Please call us.
Science:
We tried out something really cool today. Looking at pictures through a water lens!

We placed a few empty glasses on each table and the children drew pictures and stuck a picture on every glass. After a good look at the picture stuck on the glass, we poured water into the glasses! Now, we saw what we saw but we need you to do this experiment at home so you may see the results, yourselves. Magic? Nah - haha! Needless to state, we did explain the result and what did occur in the process - refraction!

The science behind the water refraction experiment:
Refraction is the bending of light. In this case, light travelled from the air, through the front of the glass jar, through the water, through the back of the glass jar, and then back through the air, before hitting the picture. Whenever light passes from one medium into another, it refracts.
Also, the water acts as a magnifying glass, which bends the light toward the centre. The light comes together at the focal point and beyond the focal point, the image looks reversed because the light that was on the right is now on the left.

Entertainment :
We completed the art 'd Elivis'. Yay!
We have been learning the words of ‘‘Blue Suede Shoes ‘ so that we can sing to music. Stay tuned to this channel for our own rendition of this classic.
Geography:
We have come to the end of our project’  - 'My Place in the World’ we had fun creating this project. We are all so pleased with the way it turned out!
Dance with Uncle Suhairi:
Can anyone get enough of dancing to Elvis? Not us!  Today we did it to ‘Jailhouse rock” and ‘Burning Love’ but 'Blue Suede Shoes' had to be our favourite!

Uncle Suhairi really got us twisting and rocking and rolling with his signature moves and, of course, those borrowed from the King!
