Hello Parents,
Day 1 of Summer Slam 2019 took off with a bang! Our 'hellos' to each other was done in style and with much excitement. We then went on to visiting the various ‘zones’ (activity rooms) as we danced and moved along to ‘Can't stop the feeling’! The colourful lights and the music indeed gave that extra magic to our step!

Next, it was time for a game of 'Tic Tac Toe' between two teams, ‘Team Blue’ and Team Pink’ - team names chosen by our enthusiastic slammers! Our fun game ended in a close tie.
Gymnastics with Coach Annie
The very first session took off well. After going through a few warm-up exercises, Coach showed us how to tumble and turn. Children also learnt to balance as they walked on a balance beam. We also had requests for cartwheels to be taught! We sure have an enthusiastic group of Summer Slammers.
Science
Our first experiment of the season was making a volcano eruption by combining baking soda and vinegar coloured with red food colouring. We first formed the structure using play dough. Children went on to make molten lava and rocks for special effects!
It was a thrilling experience for the children to see what happened when the coloured vinegar was poured into our structure that was filled with baking soda. Loud cheers and claps filled the room!

What’s the science behind this interesting phenomenon?
When baking soda reacts with the vinegar, it releases a gas called carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is what makes the mixture expand and become foamy, as it erupts out like a volcano. The addition of food colouring made the ‘lava’ red.
Snack Time
All that dancing, gymnastics and thrilling experiment sure got our tummies hungry... We made a special snack of chocolate coated pretzels topped with colourful sprinkles mmm… yummy….
We got the thumbs up for the tasty snack!

Entertainment:
Our music theme for the week is songs of none other than the King of Pop ‘Micheal Jackson’.
We shared a little about the pop icon. It sure took our children by surprise when they heard that Michael began singing at the age of 6 and was a member of the group called the Jackson 5.
Benji's very first reaction on seeing a picture of the young Michael Jackson was 'oh his hair is like a bush! :-) We saw some videos of the pop star and Benji and Orit, joined by the rest of their friends gave the famous ‘Moon Walk’ a try, as well as many other Jackson moves!

Lunch Time:
Lunch Time: Children were shown to set the table and then we sang grace and relished the meal. It was sweet to see children bobbing their heads to the music playing in the background as they ate.
Tanagrams, building blocks, snakes and ladders and other board games were laid out for the children as they relaxed, post lunch.
Geography and Art and Craft :
We combined a lesson on geography with art. We spoke about the world, the continents and oceans. Children will be making a model of the globe. Today we marked the continents and coloured them.
We also did a fun art project of making a puffer fish using bubble wrap. Children found facts of the puffer fish truly fascinating.
Sports:
It was time for Rugby - with Uncle Dennis and Sathish. After sharing the history of the game, they were shown the very first skill required of the game - how to pass the ball.
A quick pretzel snack after the sports lesson hit just the right spot!
We hope you enjoy the pictures and our update. We will be back tomorrow with more fun news. Have a wonderful evening!
Team SS 2019
